Before this, the record for the lowest total defended in an IPL game was with the Chennai Super Kings who had managed to defend 116 against Punjab Kings, then Kings XI Punjab, in Durban in the 2009 edition.

Punjab Kings were bowled out for just 111 in 15.3 overs as Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers ran riot. After a decent start from openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, PBKS just collapsed and kept losing wickets one after the other. There were absolutely no partnerships whatsoever and KKR struck at regular intervals. Harshit Rana picked up three wickets while the spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine got a couple of wickets each.
KKR lost their openers quickly but captain Ajinkya Rahane and youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi weaved a 55-run partnership for the third wicket. The game looked done and dusted when KKR had reached 62/2 in 7.3 overs. They needed 50 runs from 75 balls with eight wickets in hand. That is where Yuzvendra Chahal turned the game on its head.
Chahal picked four wickets in a memorable spell of spin bowling and KKR lost their last 8 wickets for just 23 runs to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
