India's ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect on Wednesday, 7 May 2025.
The 38-year-old Mumbai batter has played 67 Test matches and in 116 innings, he has made 4301 runs with 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. His best score in the red-ball cricket in 212 runs.
He announced his decision with a story on his Instagram account with his Test cap, writing, "It has been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all of the love and support over the years."
Earlier, it was reported from various news channels that the national selectors had decided to remove Rohit Sharma as captain of India's Test team and go with a new leader for the tour of England that starts next month.
He will continue to lead the Indian team in the ODI format - the only format he has not retired from. He announced his retirement from T20I cricket with his teammate Virat Kohli after winning the ICC T20I World Cup 2024.
