With the direct qualification for ICC Women's World Cup 2025 in India also on the line, this series becomes even more important for Bangladesh. For Ireland women though, it's yet another exposure tour. And they arrived in the South Asian country with high hopes. But it took one innings to deflate the Gaby Lewis-led side as the hosts piled on runs in the first match.
Batting first, Bangladesh posted 252/4 in 50 overs with skipper Sharmin Akhter hitting 96 off 89 balls. The wicketkeeper-batter was involved in two crucial stands, 104 off 105 with opener Fargana Hoque (61 off 110) and 61 off 64 with Nigar Sultana (run-a-ball 28). Freya Sargent, the 18-year-old all-rounder, claimed a brace with her off-spin.
Ireland Women, in reply, were shot out for 98 all out in 28.5 overs. Sultana Khatun and Nahida Akter registered identical bowling figures (3/23). In a sorry-looking batting card, only three batters reached double-digit scores for Ireland -- Sarah Forbes (25 off 51), Orla Prendergast (19 off 34), and Laura Delany (22 off 38).
A record win for Bangladesh. The 154-run win is their biggest in the format, surpassing the 119-run margin they achieved against South Africa at East London in December 2023.

What about the ICC Women's Championship?
Launched in 2014 as the main qualifying tournament or rather a series for subsequent Women's ODI Cricket World Cup, the current cycle covers 2022-2025 (for the 2025 World Cup in India). It used to be an eight-team affair, but the International Cricket Council added Bangladesh and Ireland into the roster to make it more inclusive and help grow women's game.
These 10 teams are pitted against each other in many bilateral series. During this window, after the 2022 World Cup and 2025 World Cup, each team will play eight series (four home and four away) of three matches.
After the end of the ICC Women's Championship 2022-25, the top five teams will get automatic qualification to the eight-team World Cup, of course, plus the hosts. The bottom four teams will then play in a six-team Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
Teams qualified for the 2025 World Cup: Australia (28 points), England (28) and South Africa (23). India, the hosts, have also earned 25 points.
Teams to compete in the qualifier: Pakistan and Ireland are confirmed to finish in the bottom four of the Championship; Scotland and Thailand have earned the qualifying thanks to rankings.
That leaves Sri Lanka (22 points), New Zealand (20), Bangladesh (15) and the West Indies (14) fighting for the two direct available spots.
After the current series, Bangladesh will conclude their ICC Women's Championship 2022-25 with a three-match series in the West Indies (January 2025). For now, they will play a three-match T20 International series against the visiting Ireland, starting December 5, 2024, after the third ODI, scheduled for December 2.
