The South African opener had looked in sublime touch throughout her innings, reaching her third ODI century with a composed back-foot punch to sweeper cover off Nallapureddy Charani. Her powerful strokeplay, including a stylish half-sweep-pull to the fine leg fence just moments before walking off, had put South Africa in a dominant position.

Although she showed signs of fatigue under the heat, there had been no clear indication of any serious discomfort until the sudden exit, which appeared to be precautionary. With Brits off the field and visibly struggling, Sune Luus came in to continue the charge.
