After opting to bat first on a dry Galle surface, Travis Head (57) and Usman Khawaja (232) pressed the attacking pedal and took Australia off to a flier. Steve Smith (141) , then joined the party after entering the 10k Test club.
Australia posted a monstrous 654-6 in 154 overs. Sri Lanka were in early trouble after Mitchell Starc caused a few problems with the new ball dismissing Dimuth Karunaratne and Kamindu Mendis. Matthew Kuhnemann starred with five wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 165.
Sri Lanka were put to bat again after Australia enforced the follow on, but the same followed as they were cheaply dismissed for 247 in 54.3 overs.
Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon picked four each to give Australia a 1-0 lead going into the second Test.
