Israeli aircraft struck a residential block in war-ravaged northern Gaza on Wednesday, killing at least 23 people, health officials said, as renewed fighting showed no signs of letting up in the devastated Palestinian enclave, the AP reports.

The Strike

According to the Health Ministry's emergency service, the attack hit a four-story building in the Shijaiyah neighborhood of Gaza City and rescuers were searching for victims under the rubble.

Civil Defense, a rescue group operating under the Hamas-run government, said other neighboring buildings were also damaged in the attack.

What Did The Israeli Military Say?

The Israeli military also confirmed that it had killed a senior Hamas militant it said was behind the attacks from Shijaiyah, but did not name him or provide further details.

Israel blames the militant group for the deaths of Palestinian civilians as it tends to entrench itself in dense urban areas.

The UN On Strike

The United Nations said the Israeli military has refused to allow aid workers to carry humanitarian supplies into the Gaza Strip, more than two-thirds of the 170 attempts to move humanitarian supplies into the country since the ceasefire ended.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric stated that the efforts to deliver dwindling aid supplies to Palestinians are “very strained.”

Israel resumed its war against Hamas in Gaza last month after an eight-week ceasefire broke down.

The ceasefire gave war-weary Palestinians in Gaza a much-needed respite from the fighting and sent a flow of humanitarian aid into the territory. It led to the release of 25 living Israeli hostages held in Gaza and the return of the remains of eight others in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
