At least 29 Palestinians were killed, 55 wounded, and 80 missing in a series of powerful Israeli air strikes on Shujayea district in eastern Gaza City, Al-Jazeera reported.

Medical charity Doctors Without Borders said an Israeli attack hit close to its clinic in the so-called safe zone of al-Mawasi in southern Gaza.

The Israeli military said it targeted a senior Hamas fighter in the air raids that blew up an entire neighbourhood in eastern Gaza City, killing at least 29 people, including children and women on April 8.

The army said it struck a senior Hamas terrorist who was responsible for planning and executing terrorist attacks from the area, Al-Jazeera said.

It said several steps were taken before the attack to mitigate harm to civilians, but did not elaborate.

Residents who survived are coming together to try and get the trapped victims out of the rubble – among them children and women. Israeli drones are hovering over the area, threatening the hundreds of people engaged in rescue efforts.
