Weather Update: 4 Dead, Red Alert Issued As Gusty Winds, Heavy Rain Pound Delhi-NCR; Power Cut, Flight Ops Hit

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a red alert has been issued for today in Delhi, with severe thunderstorms and squally winds between 70-80 kmph. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) along a few airlines have issued separate advisories for passengers.

At least four people died and one person was injured as strong winds uprooted a tree which fell on a tubewell room built on the farm in Kharkhari Canal village in Dwarka, news agency ANI said quoting Delhi Police.

"4 people were killed and one injured after a tree fell on a tubewell room built on the farm in Kharkhari Canal village in Dwarka, due to strong winds this morning. The deceased are identified as 26-year-old Jyoti and her three children. Her husband, Ajay, has sustained minor injuries", Delhi Police told ANI.

Incessant torrential rainfall coupled with thunderstorms and gusty winds lashed Delhi and its adjoining areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) early on Friday.

The adverse weather condition significantly impacted flight operations. Besides, waterlogging and power cut has been reported across parts of the national capital region, as per media reports.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a red alert has been issued for today in Delhi, with severe thunderstorms and squally winds between 70-80 kmph. Latest data shows recording of squally winds of 78 kmph at Pragati Maidan, 59 kmph at Lodhi Road and Pitam Pura, and 56 kmph at Nazafgarh.

The weather department has advised people to stay indoors, close windows and avoid travelling till the inclement weather subsides.

Flights Ops Hit, Advisories Issued

The inclement weather condition affected fight operations significantly. According to the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which operates the airport, some flights were affected owing to inclement weather conditions.

The Delhi airport issued an advisory on X, saying that some flights had been impacted due to the inclement weather in the national capital. Passengers have been advised to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information.

"Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience," DIAL said in a post on X.

In view of the adverse situation, Air India also infirmed that flight operations in parts of northern India were affected.

"Some of our flights to and from Delhi are being delayed or diverted, which is likely to impact our overall flight schedule. We are doing our best to minimise disruptions," the airline posted on X at 5.51 am.

Weather Report: Alerts For Other Places

Besides the national capital region, according to IMD, severe thunderstorms with squally winds and heavy rainfall are likely in parts of north, east and south India as well.

Severe thunderstorms with lightning, squally winds and hailstorms/rainfall were predicted in north Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, southwest Rajasthan, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, south Gangetic West Bengal and north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
