Earlier, NZ-W skipper Suzie Bates had won the toss and opted to bowl against their Asian counterparts at McLean Park. The visitors lost their influential skipper Chamari Athapaththu early on in the innings for 9 runs.

Soon after, the NZ bowlers made use of the overcast conditions as they put Sri Lanka under some serious pressure at 93/4. However, Harshitha Samarawickrama (66 not out) fought bravely to anchor the SL innings.

Samarawickrama along with Nilakshi de Silva (17 off 33 balls), put on a valiant effort as they steered the visitors to some parity.

Sri Lanka were 147/5 at 36.4 overs before rain halted play in Napier. For the hosts, Bree Illing (2/42) was the pick of the bunch.

The next New Zealand Women vs Sri Lanka Women, 3rd ODI (ICC Championship Match) will be played on Sunday, March 9 at Saxton Oval, Nelson.
