Only Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis put up some serious resistance for Sri Lanka who reached 229/9 at Stumps. Chandimal scored 74 while Mendis was still batting at 59.
Former Sri Lanka captain Karunaratne, playing his 100th and final Test, looked good but was bowled by Lyon on 36. The off-spinner also dismissed Pathum Nissanka and Angelo Matthews. Mitchell Starc also picked up three wickets while Mathew Kuhnemann took two wickets. Travis Head also got one wicket.
Sri Lanka suffered an embarrassing defeat by an innings and 242 rubs in the first Test, and the loss also marked the hosts’ worst defeat in history and would be hungry to fight and level the series.
On the other hand, Australia are looking for a 2-0 series sweep. The skipper Steve Smith expects the surface to assist spin, unlike the first test when his batters flourished, which could pose a threat.
