Just like most years, the financial success of the players was directly proportional to their tournament performance.

The two massive winners in 2024 were the contestants of the FIDE World Championship - Grandmasters Gukesh and Ding Liren. 

Both GMs won over $1,000,000 in the World Championship alone, with the 18-year-old Indian surpassing $1.5 million, taking first spot, according to Chess.com

Alireza Firouzja, an Iranian-born grandmaster who now plays for France is third on the list with $639,173, having played 18 major events.

Despite missing a few classical tournaments, Magnus Carlsen was only bettered by three GMs, as the Norwegian is fourth on the list with $633,369 in 11 tournaments. 

Both GMs Fabiano Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi made over $400,000, having featured in 14 major events each.

While Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Hikaru Nakamura, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu all made over $200,000.

GMs Ju Wenjun and Humpy Koneru made $170,386 and $123,497, respectively.

Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen leads the life-time earnings list with $10,776,973, followed by GM Vishwanathan Anand ($9,485,844), and GM Garry Kasparov ($7,967,979).

These numbers, however, do not include appearance fee, sponsorships, streaming figures, coaching fee, royalties, government prize, team events and national championships.
