She gained widespread recognition as Robin Scherbatsky in the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014) and as Maria Hill, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with The Avengers (2012).
Born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Cobie Smulders comes from a diverse background, with a Dutch father and a British mother. She grew up in White Rock, British Columbia, and later moved to West Point Grey, a neighborhood in Vancouver, where she attended Lord Byng Secondary School. Initially, Smulders dreamed of becoming a marine biologist, but her interest in theater grew during high school. She briefly studied at the University of Victoria before deciding to focus entirely on acting.
Before stepping into the world of acting, Smulders worked as a model, though she later admitted that she didn’t enjoy the experience. She found it frustrating to be judged solely on her appearance and welcomed the opportunity to transition into acting, where she could express her thoughts and emotions.
Smulders' breakout role came with How I Met Your Mother, where she played Robin Scherbatsky, a witty and ambitious journalist. The show became a massive success and ran for nine seasons, making her a household name. She then moved on to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portraying Maria Hill, a key ally to Nick Fury. On television, she starred in Friends from College (2017–2019) and Stumptown (2019–2020). She also received praise for her performances in A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017) and Impeachment: American Crime Story (2021). Smulders became a U.S. citizen in 2020 while still retaining her Canadian citizenship. She shared that part of her decision to become an American citizen was influenced by the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
