Biography
Karan Johar, born Rahul Kumar Johar on May 25, 1972, in Mumbai, India, is a well-known filmmaker, producer, and TV personality in Hindi cinema. He is the son of Yash Johar, a famous film producer and founder of Dharma Productions. Karan grew up in a multicultural household where English was the main language, and his father practiced prayers from Hindu, Sikh, and Christian traditions. He attended Green Lawns High School and later H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.
Karan started his career as an actor in the 1989 TV show Indradhanush. Inspired by legendary filmmakers like Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra, he made his directorial debut with the hit film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which won him several awards. He went on to direct and produce many successful films, including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001), My Name Is Khan (2010), and Shershaah (2021). His work has earned him numerous accolades, including two National Film Awards and seven Filmfare Awards. In 2020, he was honored with the Padma Shri by the Indian government.
Apart from films, Karan hosts the popular talk show Koffee with Karan, judges reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, and has ventured into radio and dating shows. He is also known for launching new talent through his production company, Dharma Productions.
On a personal note, Karan is openly gay but has chosen not to publicly discuss his sexual orientation due to India's legal environment. In 2017, he became a father to twins, Yash and Roohi, via surrogacy. He has faced criticism for promoting nepotism in Bollywood, especially after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in 2020. However, Karan has defended his choices, stating that many of the directors and actors he has introduced are outsiders to the industry. He believes that talent, whether from within or outside the industry, should be recognized and celebrated.
