US President Donald Trump has ordered military air strikes on members of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the African nation of Somalia.

Taking to Truth Social, the newly appointed president said "these killers, who we found hiding in caves, threatened the United States and our Allies."

"The strikes destroyed the caves they live in, and killed many terrorists without, in any way, harming civilians," the president added.

The strikes were confirmed by the Somalian President and stated that the US had informed the country of the strikes on IS leadership.

Trump did not state the names of the alleged IS members targeted and killed but he did issue a new message for the terrorist group.

"The message to ISIS and all others who would attack Americans is that "WE WILL FIND YOU, AND WE WILL KILL YOU!," said Trump.

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said he "acknowledges the unwavering support of the United States in the fight against international terrorism and welcomes the continued commitment under the decisive leadership of President Donald Trump."

As per new Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, the initial assessment shows that "multiple operatives were killed in the airstrikes and no civilians were harmed".

The strikes were carried out in the Golis mountains, in north-east region of the country.

ISIS reached international prominence in the 2010a in Syria and Iraq. Now, much of its presence can be found in Africa.

In Somalia, ISIS was formed in 2015 by a group of defectors al-Qaeda affiliated al-Shabab group, which is the largest jihadist group present in Somalia.

This is not the first strike on Somalian IS by the US. IN 2023, under the Biden administration, IS leader, Bilal al-Sudani, and 10 of his operatives in a remote mountainous cave in northern Somalia.
