Durga Puja: Kolkata's Women Artisans Keeping Traditional Artform Alive

Even as a number of potters in Kolkata's Kumartuli, the potter's hub in the city, lament that their children are no longer interest in the art of making Durga idols, a number of women artisans are keeping the traditional artform alive. Durga Puja is the major festival of the city and Kumartuli has long produced Durga idols for the city. Mala Pal runs a school where she nurtures the next generation of artisans so that the art does not fade into oblivion with her. In recent years, a number of women artisans have made their mark in the otherwise male-dominated profession.
