Having been beaten 4-1 in the T20I series earlier on in their tour of India, England started the opening 50-over match well on Thursday.
Phil Salt scored 43 and Ben Duckett added 32 in a solid-looking opening partnership, yet an all-too-familiar batting collapse cost Jos Buttler's team.
After Salt was run out, the tourists lost two more wickets in the next over, with Duckett and Harry Brook (0) falling to Harshit Rana.
On his return to the ODI team, Joe Root managed just 19 runs before he succumbed to Ravindra Jadeja, who took a hugely impressive 3-26.
Buttler (52) and Jacob Bethell (51) offered stoic resistance in the middle order, though India's pressure with the ball told as England were bowled out for 248.
Early dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) and India captain Rohit Sharma (two) offered England hope, but Gill took charge of the situation from then on.
He plundered 87 from 96 balls to anchor India's innings, with Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel contributing quickfire half-centuries around him.
Adil Rashid's dismissal of Patel kick-started an India wobble, with KL Rahul and Gill following in swift succession, but an edge from Jadeja off Saqib Mahmood took them over the line with 68 balls to spare.
Data Debrief: England toil away from home soil
The T20I series was a disaster for England, and Brendon McCullum's men must now lick their wounds to try and level this three-match series.
They have lost five of their last six ODIs against India, including their last three on the bounce. They last went on a longer losing run against India in the format between June 2013 and September 2014 (four matches).
Indeed, England have won only one of their last five ODIs played away from home (L4) - a five-wicket victory against West Indies last November.
