Qatar's campaign was sailing smoothly until they faced the United Arab Emirates, evidently the strongest outfit in Asia Qualifier B. A 29-run defeat on the penultimate day not only ended their four-match winning streak but also complicated their qualification prospects.
Now, they face Saudi Arabia in a do-or-die match. A no result would still be enough for the hosts, but the chances of play not happening in Doha are almost nil.
Here's the state of play in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier B 2024:
First thing first. Two top teams from Asia Qualifier B will qualify for the regional final, to be held in Malaysia next year.
As things stand, Qatar are second with eight points with a Net Run Rate of 0.850. Both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have six points each, but the former are third thanks to their superior NRR, 1.221 as against the latter's 1.214.
A win for Qatar, and they can even finish at the top of the seven-team table with 10 points. The UAE already have 10 points, and they face Bahrain later in the day. Saudi Arabia, with a win, can force bring the NRR into play.
Fourth-place Bahrain, with an unlikely win against the already-qualified UAE, can move to second if Saudi Arabia beat Qatar.
Which teams have qualified for the regional final, and how?
Eight teams: Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nepal, Oman, Papua New Guinea and Samoa, and the United Arab Emirates.
Nepal, Oman and Papua New Guinea earned byes thanks to their participation in the previous T20 World Cup.
Kuwait and Malaysia qualified from Asia Sub-regional Qualifier A, Japan from East Asia-Pacific Sub-regional Qualifier B and Samoa from East Asia-Pacific Sub-regional Qualifier A.
And on Wednesday, the UAE claimed one of the two spots from the Qualifier B.
