Alcaraz, 21, is bidding to become the youngest male to complete the career Grand Slam -- of winning all four Majors. The Spaniard won his first Major at the US Open 2022 and is the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion. This is his fourth visit Down Under for the season-opening Slam.
His best finish at the season-opening Slam in Melbourne was a quarter-final appearance last year (defeat to German Alexander Zverev). The four-time Major winner is seeded third this term, behind holder and top-ranked Jannik Sinner and Zverev.
Shevchenko, meanwhile, will be making his third Australian Open appearance, including the Qualifiers in 2023. The Russian-born Kazakhstani made his Grand Slam debut at the 2023 French Open. Currently 72nd in the ATP rankings, the 24-year-old is out to make a statement.
Both players turned pro in 2018, but they have met only once. Carlos Alcaraz leads Alexander Shevchenko 1-0 in the head-to-head -- a 6-2, 6-1 win in the Round of 64 meeting at Madrid Open 2024.
