The minority coalition partner New Zealand First tabled a bill in the parliament on Tuesday that has sparked a debate on transgender rights.
In practice would define men and women by their biology, restricting the transgender community from being recognized in the eyes of the law. Providing a statement on the matter, New Zealand First leader and deputy prime minister Winston Peters asserted that laws should provide legal certainty while also reflecting the biological reality.
The law is still far from being passed as it has to be selected randomly from a ballot and then has to garner enough support to prove a majority. Peters, however, claimed that the bill demonstrates how far the delusions of the left have taken us as a society and that this serves as an attempt to fight back.
While speaking to Stuff news, New Zealand Opposition leader Chris Hipkins mentioned the move as a “typical populist move” that diverts attention from the pertinent issues that trouble the New Zealanders like cost of living, job losses and a health system in crisis.
This move comes after a chain of similar events in Britain and United States with diverse opinions stemming from all societies. The United States also witnessed similar moves with President Donald Trump issuing executive orders including the exclusion of transgender people from military service.
