A blast at a mosque in northwestern Pakistan injured an Islamist party leader and three others including children on Friday, as per media reports. It was not immediately clear who was behind the explosion.

According to Reuters, Abdullah Nadeem, a local leader of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) political party, was believed to be the target of the blast and had been hospitalised with serious injures, said Asif Bahadar, a district police chief in South Waziristan.

The incident took place within days after twenty-one civilians and four soldiers were killed in a militant attack that took place in Pakistan's Balochistan on the night of March 11 as the insurgents hijacked a train carrying 440 passengers. The Pakistan Army was able to execute all the militants and safely evacuate the remaining passengers by the night of March 12.

In February, a suicide bomber killed six worshippers during Friday prayers at an Islamic seminary in northwestern Pakistan, known as a historic training ground for the Afghan Taliban.

In recent times, blasts and attacks have been on the rise in Pakistan's border regions with Afghanistan. In view of the frequent escalations, Pakistan has vowed to crack down on growing militancy.
