Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, officially commissioned the Vizhinjam International Seaport. The port in Kerala, which is India's first mega transshipment container terminal, is a project that costs Rs 8,900 crore.

Located in the Thiruvananthapuram district, the port is expected to strengthen India's position in global trade and reduce reliance on foreign ports.

Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani and Thiruvananthapuram Congress MP Shashi Tharoor are present at the event.

In a post on 'X' on Thursday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, "Tomorrow marks a historic moment as Shri Narendra Modi ji, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, dedicates the Vizhinjam International Seaport to the nation."

"This landmark project - the largest-ever state investment in any port in the country, with two-thirds of the cost borne by the Government of Kerala - reflects the state's strong commitment to development. The commissioning of Vizhinjam Port marks the beginning of a new chapter in India라이브 바카라 maritime journey, placing the nation firmly on the global map," he added.

Before this port, nearly 75 per cent of all maritime cargo bound for India was transhipped at foreign ports like Singapore, Colombo, or Dubai where goods in larger containers were transferred to smaller vessels that could dock at Indian Ports.

However, Vizhinjam is now the Indian subcontinent's only transshipment hub. Its location, 10 nautical miles (19km) from the east-west shipping channel which connects Europe and North America to East Asian countries, gives the Indian shipping industry and economy a big boost.

The deep-water port has been developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ). "We are committing an additional investment of Rs 20,000 crore," Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd Managing Director Karan Adani said at the Invest Kerala Global Summit as per the Business Standard.

With this, the Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to be a big improvement to India's maritime capabilities.
