Australia crossed the 352-run target set by England in 47.3 overs to win the game by five wickets. Inglis finished unbeaten at 120 off 84 balls.
Earlier, a depleted Australia had won the toss and opted to bowl first in the first game of the tournament in Lahore.

Ben Duckett slammed the highest ever Champions Trophy score and took England to 351/8 in 50 overs on a flat batting surface. Duckett stitched a crucial 158-run partnership with Joe Root (68) for the third wicket and England looked set to post an even bigger total. However, the dangerous trio of Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone failed to fire.
For Australia, Ben Dwarshius picked up three wickets while Adam Zampa and Marnus Labuschagne took two wickets each
Australia lost the reliable duo of Travis Head and Steve Smith cheaply but Labuschagne combined with Matthew Short to bring Australia back in the game. Labuschagne was dismissed on 47 and soon after that Short too was removed for 63 as England sensed a comeback into the game.
Inglis then found support in Alex Carey and the wicket-keeping duo added 146 runs together before the latter fell for 69. The fall of Carey brought a rampaging Maxwell on the crease and Inglis too switched gears as English death bowling looked ordinary. Maxwell fired an unbeaten 15-ball 32 while Inglis hit the winning six in the 48th over to help Australia clinch their first win in the tournament in 16 years.
Australia had not won a Champions Trophy game since they lifted the title in the 2009 edition.
