India Vs Australia, 3rd Test Day 5 Highlights: Match Drawn After Rain Washes Away Last Session

Welcome to the live coverage of Day 5 of the 3rd Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Draw is the most likely result that awaits us in this match. 98 overs of play remaining today excluding the breaks that will be forced due to rain. Australia will have to bat again with India avoiding a follow on. So, really tough task for them.

Right then. We are set to begin with the final day of the third Test match. Pat Cummins with the ball to bowl one ball and complete his over. Remember Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the game so Australia have just three frontline bowlers. Akash Deep on strike with Jasprit Bumrah on the other end.

First ball of the day and the last ball of the over easily negotiated by Akash Deep. Good length ball around the off stump and Akash just blunts it with soft hands.

Nathan Lyon is bowling from the other end. He is trying to entice the batters with flight but so far both Bumrah and Akash Deep have managed to contain themselves.

Travis Head comes up with the golden arm and India are bowled out for 260. Beautiful ball from Head that forces Akash Deep to drag himself out in forward defence. The ball beats his bat and Alex Carey dislodges the ball. Replays show Akash Deep is out of his crease and Indian innings thus ends. Brilliant fightback from Akash Deep. He departs for 31. Bumrah remains not out on 10. A solid 47-run partnership for the last wicket ends.

It is raining at the Gabba in Brisbane. Almost an hour since we saw sone cricketin action. Rain might just be the winner of this match.

Rain continues and we are surely headed for a draw now. There is not indication of rain going away and the match resuming. So in all likelihood, both India and Australia will go to Melbourne with the series locked at 1-1.

An early lunch taken by the umpires with weather not improving. Rain continues and the ground is being shielded by the covers. A frustrating Test match heading towards a frustrating draw.

Good news coming from the Gabba. The rain is gone and the sun is now shining bright above the ground. Covers are off and the players are warming up. Indian bowlers are ready to take on their opponents. But what would Australia's strategy be? Will they bring out Travis Head to open for quick runs? We will know soon.

Australia begin with their second innings and we do not see a change in opening pair. Nathan McSweeney and Usman Khawaja are in the middle. Jasprit Bumrah with the ball for India.

First runs for Australia on the third ball of the innings and Nathan McSweeney will open his account with a double to the gully. Just the two runs from the over.

Bumrah gets Khawaja! India draw first blood and it is yet again the superman Bumrah who gets the wicket. Length ball angling into Khawaja and he pushes at it with a big gap between bat and pad through which the ball sneaks into the wicket. Clean Bowled! Khawaja gone for 8.

Bumrah dismisses Labuschagne!

He is unstoppable. Bumrah takes his eighth wicket of the match and Labuschagne is on his way back. Labuschagne chases this ball outside off and edges it back to the wicketkeeper. India suddenly are on the charge. Big moment in the game.

Not Steve Smith but it is Mitchell Marsh who comes out to bat at the number four position. Two early wickets but this looks like a sign that Australia are ready to launch an attack. Would not be easy though against Bumrah.

Marsh begins with five dot balls against Bumrah.

Akash Deep strikes straight away. Just his third ball and he gets Nathan McSweeney. This is looking dangerous for Australia now. They have lost their third wicket and the lead has just crossed 200. Another batter trying to push for runs and perishing by edging it to the wicketkeeper. Australia in big trouble now.

Travis Head is the new man in and he finishes the over by playing three dot balls.

Another one bites the dust. Akash Deep gets Mitchell Marsh's wicket. India on the top. What a spell of bowling from Akash Deep and Bumrah. Marsh tries to push at the ball that is going away from him and all he manages is an outside edge. Rishabh Pant collects the ball with ease and Australia lose their fourth wicket. Akash Deep was really unlucky in the first dig but now he has two wickets in just 11 balls. What a start for India!

Steve Smith finally comes out to bat and finishes the over with a dot ball.

Steve Smith is out! This game is turning out to be an absolute thriller. Absolute mayhem in the middle. Australia are five down for 33! What is happening. Steve Smith tries to glance this ball of his legs but gets an edge and Pant pouches a brilliant catch. Siraj gets his firsst and Smith is gone for 4. The momentum fully in the favour of Indians now. Incredible game of cricket!

Siraj gets the big fish. Travis Head is gone! Head tries to go leg side. Swings hard and gets a massive top edge. The ball just stays in the air for a long time before Rishabh Pant collects another catch. India's biggest problem in the series has been sent back to the dressing room. Head goes for 17.

Pat Cummins is hitting the ball well. Two sixes and two fours and Cummins has raced to 22 from just nine deliveries. Very important runs these.

Boom Boom Bumrah. Another wicket for him. His ninth in the game and he dismisses the dangerous looking Pat Cummins. Slower ball and Cummins swings hard but is early into his shot. The ball goes up in the off side and is taken by KL Rahul.

There comes the declaration. India need 275 to win. Australia need 10 wickets. And both teams have just around 50 overs if rain does not interrupt.

It is going to be chaotic for sure. Australia have enough runs on the board. An India win will need some miraculous performances. Australia too will need an all-time great spell from one of Starc, Cummins or Lyon to win this match. Add to that the unpredictable nature of weather. Very exciting chase coming up shortly.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul in the middle. 275 is the target for India. A steep climb without any doubt. Mitchell Starc to begin with three slips and a gully.

Black clouds are hovering over the stadium. We are playing under floodlights. Proper classic in the making. Three runs for India from the first over of the chase.

And the dark clouds are just too dark to let the game continue, say the umpires. It is really dark at the stadium even with floodlights and players have to walk back to the dressing room. A cautious start for India so far.

A good decision. Tea has been taken. So, how much time will we lose now is the question. If play begins at the right time, we will start in about half an hour. But will the weather allow?

Raining heavily at the Gabba now and it seems we are done with any chances of continuing the game. We are getting a draw for all practical purposes.

R Ashwin will now longer be seen in Indian jersey. A big call from the 38-year-old as he was still not far from his best. In fact, he was the Player of the Series just two series ago against Bangladesh. But he thinks it is time for him to make way for young talent. Brave decision. He goes down as one of the greatest Indian Test players of all time. A giant of the game and India's biggest match winner in modern times. Good luck Ashwin!

Talking about the match, it was rain playing hide and seek on most days except the second day. Australia scored 445 in the first innings thanks to tons from Head and Smith. Bumrah picked up a six-fer for India. In reply, gritty fifties from Kl Rahul and Jadeja helped India put up a fight and just when it looked like a follow on was imminent, Akash Deep and Bumrah put up a brilliant 10th-wicket partnership to avoid that Australia then raced to 89 and declared to set up a 275-run target for India but rain did not allow enough play.

Pat Cummins: Would be better to be 2-1, lot of rain, nothing we can do about it. We set a huge total and felt like we were right ahead of the game throughout. Poor Josh (Hazlewood), one of those things, few rain breaks probably helped, Starc and I were able to push through. Day 5 here can be up and down, there wasn't much cricket played on it, felt challenging when the ball was new and hard. Smith and Head's innings' were fantastic, Alex Carey too. Lyon looked really good, Starc got wickets, just about ticked off every box. (On the full-house expected at the MCG on boxing-day) That will be amazing, one of those things here in Australia that you wake up and can't wait for.

Rohit Sharma: I mean, we will take that. Obviously to have interruptions like that wasn't great, but going to Melbourne at 1-1 pretty much gives us that confidence to go out there and pull things towards us. The situation we were in just after lunch (on Day 4), needed someone to stand up and take us through, we knew with the weather, we knew it wasn't going to be a full game. Credit to Jadeja, the way he played and Rahul, the way he played was magnificent at the top of the order. 

Head gets the Player of the Match award for his brilliant 152 that set up Australia's big total in the first innings. He says that he is a little sore but will be fine for the next match.
