Pietersen played for the Capitals – formerly the Delhi Daredevils – in the 2012 and 2014 IPL seasons, helping them top the league table in the former campaign.
The England icon scored 599 runs in 19 appearances for Delhi, who are hoping to end a three-year exile from the playoffs in 2025.
This represents Pietersen's first foray into IPL coaching, nine years after he last played in the competition for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant.
The 44-year-old said: "It's an exciting opportunity to step into this new role as a mentor for the Capitals.
"I'm really looking forward to joining the squad, working closely with the boys, and doing everything I can to help us win that ultimate prize."
The new IPL campaign begins on March 22, with the Capitals' first match pitting them against Lucknow Super Giants on March 24.
