Put into bat first, Cook Islands batter struggled and none of them could score big. The highest scorer of the innings was captain Ma'ara Ave who got 24 but took 31 balls for it. No one else from his side could enter the 20s and thus Cook Islands were restricted at 104/8 in 20 overs. Abdul Samad struck twice with the new ball for Japan while Sabaorish Ravichandran got four wickets to finish as the most successful bowler.

Japan had a terrible start in the small chase as they lost four wickets within first three overs. Ravichandran, who was the star with the ball, then took the responsibility with the bat and scored a half-century. He remained steady even as wickets fell from the other end. Ultimately, Ravichandran's half-century took Japan over the line and they won by two wickets with 14 balls still remaining in the contest.
