The T20I series opener was won by Sri Lanka, who eased to a seven-wicket win against the hosts on Friday. The Lankans chased down a 102-run target in just 14.1 overs, with skipper Chamari Athapaththu staying not out on 64 off 48 balls to take her side to a comfortable victory.
Seamer Malki Madara earlier snared three wickets (3/14 in 3.5 overs) to help dismiss the White Ferns for 101 runs in 18.5 overs, and was hence named the Player of the Match.
The home team had earlier claimed the ODI series 2-0, and the win in the first T20I bodes well for Athapaththu's side. They will look to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series with a win on Sunday, while New Zealand will aim to equalize before the third and final game in Dunedin on March 18.
