Hours before the Champions Trophy gets underway in Karachi, news has trickled in of gunmen attacking a Lahore-bound bus in southwest Pakistan's Balochistan province. The unknown armed men have killed seven passengers in Barkhan, a district of southwestern Balochistan. The group of around 40 armed men stopped multiple buses and vehicles, checking national identity cards before forcing the seven passengers off the bus and shooting them, a Reuters report quoted deputy commissioner Waqar Khurshid Alam, a senior administrative official, as saying.

Australia left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann is likely to learn the decision on his suspect bowling action by the end of next week, after reportedly being put through rigorous tests in Brisbane. An Australian Associated Press report stated that the 28-year-old was put through his paces during a session that lasted more than one hour, asked to bowl at a similar speed and with similar revolutions to what he did in Galle when his action was deemed to be suspect.

Pakistan captain Mohammed Rizwan has won the toss and decided that he will have a bowl first, considering the likelihood of dew later in the day-night game.

Babar Azam, who will bat later today, has been displaced from the top spot in ICC's one-day international rankings. India's rising top-order batter Shubman Gill is the new number 1. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana climbs atop the bowling rankings, taking the premier position for the first time by surpassing Afghanistan tweaker Rashid Khan.

Shaheen Shah Afridi has the ball in hand and Will Young is on strike for the first ball of the tournament, with Devon Conway alongside him. The senior Pakistan seamer gets the Champions Trophy underway with a delivery right on the money, on a length around off stump. But the second ball causes a big injury scare for Pakistan. Fakhar Zaman, while chasing the ball in the covers, appears to have had some strain in his lower back and asks for a substitute. He is taken off the field and Pakistan would surely be worried.

New Zealand have started in dominant fashion with the bat. Openers Will Young and Devon Conway have not looked in any trouble and are finding the fence with alarming regularity to Pakistan's liking. The fast outfield is helping even the mishits carry to the boundary, and this could have a bearing in the match later on as well.

The first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 saw relatively a lower number of spectators at the National Stadium in Karachi. Many former cricketers took a jibe at Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed continued their attack and kept the new batter Daryl Mitchell at bay. Haris Rauf was introduced into the attack in the 13th over and Will Young welcomed him with a six. The Kiwi duo are taking their their time to build a partnership.

Haris Rauf continued his attack from one end and got rid of Daryl Mitchell in the 17th over when Shaheen Shah Afridi took a fine catch. Black Caps lost their third wicket. Tom Latham joined Will Young on the crease. Young also completed his half-century soon after that and continued to bat with good strike rate.

Tom Latham and Will Young are trying to build a partnership. Shaheen Shah Afridi was called back into the attack but he failed to bring any wicket with him. Salman Ali Agha also joined him from the other end but looked easy to play. New Zealand collected 20 runs in the last five overs and managed to lose no more wicket.

Tom Latham has found his rhythm and Will Young is nearing his century in Karachi. The duo added 35 runs in the last five overs and managed to accelerate the run rate whenever they feel like. Latham also hit two sweep boundaries off Khushdil Shah in the 30th over.

Tom Latham and Will Young completed the 100-run stand for the fourth wicket. Young also completed his century. It was his first outside New Zealand and also the first of this ICC Champions Trophy edition. Tom Latham is nearing his half-century.

Naseem Shah was brought back into the attack and he dismissed the set batter Will Young after his first century in Pakistan. Faheem Ashraf, the substitute fielder, took a fine catch to dismiss the set batter. Glenn Phillips replaced him at the crease. Tom Latham also completed his half-century after that. Pakistan bowlers have leaked a lot of extras in this match. Latham shifted gears and hit Naseem for a six in the 40th over.

Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips have started shifting gears and scoring runs at a high run rate. First, Latham targeted Abrar Ahmed and scored three boundaries in his over then, Phillips targeted Haris Rauf and scored 16 runs from his over as well. The Kiwi batters are eyeing the score of more than 300 runs.

Matt Henry and William O'Rourke have made the life of Pakistan batters miserable in the first powerplay. Pakistan lost their captain's wicket on the last delivery of the first powerplay. Babar Azam has hit shown beautiful shots but not in the gaps. Just 10 runs came in the last five overs.

Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam rebuilt innings for Pakistan after the dismissal of captain Mohammed Rizwan. Spin was introduced after the first powerplay and Glenn Phillips along with Michael Bracewell managed to keep the scorecard low. But Pakistan are on the verge of crossing 50 runs.

The third-wicket partnership between Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam added 47 runs but Michael Bracewell bowled Zaman in the 21st over to break the stand. Pakistan lost their third wicket and now Salman Ali Agha has joined Babar Azam.

Salman Ali Agha and Babar Azam picked some bowlers and hit them for boundaries but they still need more than 250 runs to win this match in half the overs. Mitchell Santner have used the spinners very well in bowling. He used Glenn Phillips in between and finished six of his overs. Pakistan need to accelerate from here and Salman Ali Agha need to play a big knock now.

Salman Ali Agha shifted his gears and targeted spinners to collect quick runs. He targeted Glenn Phillips first and started his over with a couple of fours, then he hit Mitchell Santner for back-to-back fours in the next over. Phillips came again and he hit him for a six and four to collect 15 runs from the over.

Nathan Smith was introduced into the attack in the 31st over and he got rid of the set batter Salman Ali Agha in his first over. Then Mitchell Santner dismissed Tayyab Tahir in the next over. He went on to dismiss the half-centurion Babar Azam in his next over. Pakistan have lost six wickets and they are still very far from the target.

Khushdil Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi took the baton after Salman Agha and Babar Azam's dismissal. The duo added 40 runs in the last five overs without losing any wicket and kept Pakistan in the game. In the last 10 overs, now Pakistan need 125 runs to win this match. New Zealand also started slow but accelerated in the end. Now, Khushdil Shah need to play a big knock from here.

Khushdil Shah went berserk over New Zealand bowlers and made a quick 69 off 49 balls before William O'Rourke dismissed him in the 44th over. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf are batting now with Pakistan still needing 85 runs to win in the last five overs.

Yeah, certainly helps when you played on a surface before. Felt nice to contribute, Will Young played exceptionally and then to get to 320 was just brilliant. When I came in, it was about building a partnership. We could do that and then improve the run rate, and then GP came in and played an exceptional hand once again. Gave us the momentum to get through to the second innings. At the back end, you want to get as many as you can. Glad we could today. There was a lack of dew today so the ball turned quite a bit, it was better to bowl second with conditions like that.

They made a good target, we didn't expect that. We were looking at something around 260. We tried our best and used all tactics, but they played well and put up a good target. We see the pitch conditions, earlier the pitch wasn't easy to bat but when Will Young and Latham got together batted it got easier. At the end, we made the same mistake like we did in Lahore and they made a good target. We didn't get a good start with the bat. (On the extent of injury to Fakhar Zaman) Not sure yet, he hasn't got his result yet. He is in some pain. We lost the momentum twice - once while bowling in the death and then while batting in the powerplay. It is disappointing for us, we played it like a normal match. The match is gone now and hopefully we can do better in the rest.

Pleased with the way we went about it. Pakistan bowled well, so in the middle stage when Latham and Young could build a partnership that was great, they scored a few boundaries as well. And then GP came out and smashed it around. We were targetting around 260, but glad we could get more in the death overs. After the score we got, we were brilliant in the first 10 overs, and then we could put the squeeze in, keep that run rate pressure on them and get wickets. (On the Phillips catch) We kind of expect that from him now, and getting Rizwan out was a massive wicket. (On the importance of the previous tri-series) Understanding the conditions and the opposition was crucial. You have to hit a slightly shorter length out here and for spinners, it is about bowling slower. This win shows if we can do the hard yards with the bat, then we can carry on with the ball and put the squeeze on the opposition.

Pakistan have lost the opener against New Zealand and now will face India in their next group-fixture on 23 February in Dubai.
