The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, are now tasked with finding a suitable leader as a new World Test Championship cycle beckons.
Several names have emerged as potential successors, each bringing a unique set of credentials and considerations to the table.
The Leading Contenders
Jasprit Bumrah: The current vice-captain, Jasprit Bumrah, is a natural front-runner. Having led the team in two Test matches during last year's Border-Gavaskar Trophy, his leadership capabilities are known. However, the primary concern surrounding the pace spearhead is his workload management and injury proneness, given his unique bowling action. As a fast bowler, his availability for all matches in a long bilateral series often comes under scrutiny, a factor the selectors will weigh carefully.
Shubman Gill: Seen as a more permanent and long-term solution, the 25-year-old Shubman Gill presents a compelling case. Gill is one of the few Indian players who features regularly across all three formats. His experience leading the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League for the past two seasons has earned him praise for his calm and composed leadership, especially under pressure.
The selection panel is reportedly keen on grooming a younger captain under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir, aligning with a long-term leadership transition plan. Gill has batted both as an opener and at No. 3 in his 32 Test matches, accumulating 1,893 runs with five centuries and seven fifties.
Other Potential Candidates
KL Rahul: While not ruled out, the 33-year-old KL Rahul's long-term prospects as captain remain uncertain, according to sources. His experience is undeniable, but the selectors might be leaning towards a younger leader for the future.
Virat Kohli: The shadow of the former captain, Virat Kohli, also looms. With his vast experience leading India on the biggest stages, Kohli could be considered for a short-term role, particularly for the upcoming challenges in England, allowing for a smoother transition to a more permanent solution.
Shreyas Iyer: Another name reportedly in consideration is Shreyas Iyer. His proponents point to his experience, success in domestic cricket where he has led Mumbai to multiple titles, and his calm demeanour. Iyer also holds a central contract from the BCCI, indicating his importance in the national setup.
The selection committee is expected to convene around May 17th in Mumbai to finalise the squad and, crucially, decide on the captaincy. The primary challenge will be to strike the right balance between experience, long-term vision, and player availability. With a new World Test Championship cycle commencing, the emphasis appears to be on building a younger core and fostering leadership for the future.
