Carlo Ancelotti's side were held to a thrilling 4-4 draw in their visit to Estadio de la Ceramica last season, and they were once again stunned as the home side opened the scoring after just seven minutes.

Alex Baena's corner reached Juan Foyth after a deflection off Aurelien Tchouameni and the Argentina international turned home from close range to make it 1-0 to Villarreal.

However, Real Madrid equalised 10 minutes later when Mbappe scored from a rebound after Brahim Diaz's initial attempt was stopped by goalkeeper Diego Conde.

The France international found his second of the game six minutes later, latching on to Lucas Vazquez's through ball and slotting home to score what proved to be the winner for the visitors.

Real top the table with 60 points and are three points clear of second-placed Barcelona, who face third-placed Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Data Debrief: Mbappe hits 20 goals

With his latest brace, Mbappe has now scored 20 goals in the Spanish top flight this season - more than any other Real Madrid player.

Only Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski (21) has scored more goals than Mbappe during the ongoing campaign.

After their latest comeback win, the defending champions have won 15 points from losing positions this season, with only Celta de Vigo (16) and Atlético Madrid (17) having recovered more.
