Australian Grand Prix Highlights, F1 2025: Norris Wins Wild Race In Melbourne Leaving Verstappen, Russell Behind

With an hour to go until the Australian Grand Prix, the weather is showing signs of improvement.

We are ready to go in some time. Cars out on the course. It is wet and windy in Melbourne but all of that would not stop the race from starting on time. Lando Norris on pole, Oscar Piastri just behind him and then there is Max Verstappen.

Wet conditions in Melbourne and every driver is starting on intermediate tyres except Aston Martin's Lance Stroll who has opted for the full wets.

Formation Lap is underway now. Norris in the lead. Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar has crashed in the Formation Lap only and his car is out of track. Not the start to the season Hadjar would have wanted.

So, despite the weather permitting, we will have a slightly delayed start due to the crash. Hajdar, who is among the six rookies this season, will not be able to start.

Formation Lap is underway yet again. The conditions are just not wet but there is a lot of wind blowing as well. Not the perfect conditions for racing but makes for a really exciting watch. This is the second time the formation lap has started today. Racing Bulls' Isack Hajdar crashed earlier in what was going to be his F1 debut. He was visibly emotional walking back.

Anyways, we are about to begin.

Here we go! The 75th season of F1 racing is underway now. Lando Norris keeps his lead on Turn 1 ahead of Oscar Piastri.

Not the best of conditions for F1 beginners and the weather takes another victim. Alpine's Jack Doohan has hit the wall before Turn 6.

Carlos Sainz has crashed!!!

The defending champion is gone! What a dramatic start we have in Melbourne. Sainz joins the rookie duo of Doohan and Hajdar to crash out early in this race. Others have started clean.

A dramatic start. Three laps done. Three drivers also done with their races. Lando Norris leading with his McLaren while his teammate Oscar Piastri has been overtaken by Mercedes' Max Verstappen.

The weather has not relented just yet. Five laps done and the race is still under the shadows of yellow flag. Safety car continues to be on the track.

No rain forecast for next half-an-hour and we are set to get some heated race now that the green flag is up. Norris leading, Verstappen just behind.

Also, drivers have been told to avoid the white lines on the track.

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and RB's Yuku Tsunoda are under investigation for Safety Car infringement.

Lando Norris continues to lead but Max Verstappen is not ready to leave his side. The gap between the two has just crossed a second. Oscar Piastri following Verstappen with more than a second. George Russell and Charlse Leclerc at P4 and P5 respectively with a massive gap from Piastri. Lewis Hamilton at P8 on Ferrari debut.

Heavy rain is on the way as drivers try to cool dry their tyres. The gap between leader Lando Norris and P2 Max Verstappen is just under a second now. Oscar Piastri too has not fallen much behind. But the top three has made some distance with the rest of the race.

A mistake from Max Verstappen and we have a McLaren one-two as of now. Oscar Piastri is now at P2. This could prove to be a costly mistake from the Red Bull man.

Replays show he locked up and that gave Piastri the opportunity to race ahead.

More than 12 seconds of gap between leader Lando Norris and P3 Max Verstappen now. That one mistake from Verstappen is proving to be much costly. Oscar Piastri is trailing his McLaren teammate by just under two seconds. Russell, Leclerc, Sunoda, Albon and Hamilton form the rest of the top 8 as of now.

Oscar Piastri really wants to win his home race and now he has closed the gap with Lando Norris to less than a second. Half the race is done. Is there a dramatic twist in store or we are all set for a McLaren one-two to kick off the season?

A mistake from Oscar Piastri on Turn 6 and he falls behind. That one mistake has now led to him being more than 2.5 seconds behind Lando Norris.

Fernando Alonso crashes!

The Melbourne weather claims its fourth victim of the day. Safety car is out as Alonso's Aston Martin spins and rams into the wall making a mess of it all.

Every driver has switched to slick tyres apart from the Haas pairing of Ocon and Bearman, who are on Intermediate tyres. Anyways, they are the bottom two drivers, so it is a risk worth taking.

Heavy rain in the offing, we are being told on air. Meanwhile, the race is heating up. Even though there have been no takeovers but the race has definitely closed in. Oscar Piastri now less than one and a half second behind leader Lando Norris. Max Verstappen at P3 trailing Norris by just less than four seconds.

Talk about the race turning on its head. Verstappen is in the lead now. Oscar Piastri is off and Norris stops for pit. Amazing scenes here.

An incredible last few minutes in the race. Lando Norris is back in the lead soon after Lewis Hamilton took the top spot for a few seconds. Max Verstappen now P4 while Charles Leclerc P3. Oscar Piastri has fallen to the last spot.

Safety Car is deployed once again. Lawson makes contact with the wall and Bortoleto is off the road. In fact both drivers are off the road.

Max Verstappen in at P2 yet again as Lewis Hamilton's pit stop takes him back to eighth spot. It is all happening in Melbourne today. George Russell is at P3. Lando Norris maintains his lead.

Two laps to go. Norris leading, Verstappen second, Russell third. This is what the podium looks right now. Are we in for some late change?

Lando Norris wins Australian GP 2025!

Norris holds on to the top spot despite some incredible pressure. Max Verstappen finishes 0.837 seconds behind at P2. George Russell takes the third spot on podium.

Oscar Piastri too finishes among the points. He manages to overtake Lewis Hamilton and finish P9. Hamilton on his Ferrari debut gets P10.

What a race to begin the 75th season of F1. Lando Norris winning and Max Verstappen finishing second might feel just normal, but it was a dramatic, dramatic race. The weather in Melbourne forced RB's Isack Hadjar to crash even before the race began. The wet and windy conditions claimed more drivers including defending champions Carlos Sainz. But then we had a race to remember. Norris led from the start and for a while Verstappen was second before Oscar Piastri took that spot. A dramatic turnaround just after 40 laps saw Piastri and Verstappen go off for a while. We had Verstappen leading and then Hamilton in the pole too before Norris came back to regain top spot and win the race. Piastri too staged a small comeback to finish among points. Hamilton fell to 10th. George Russell finish third.

Six drivers could not even finish today. In fact, debutant Isack Hadjar could not even start. Tells us how difficult were the conditions in Melbourne today.
