The 2024 World Chess Championship match between D Gukesh and Ding Liren will be over 14 classical games. The winner of the match will be declared the World Champion with 7.5 points first. In case it ends in a tie after 14 games, a tiebreak is to be held the day after to declare the winner.

A time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves and then 30 minutes in all other moves applies. Each increment to have 30 seconds from move 41.

The turn of events in the 2024 World Chess Championship between D Gukesh and Ding Liren made it clear that, with nine draws by game 13, it became all but certain this edition could end in a tie and require a tiebreaker. But what exactly is a tiebreaker?

What happens if the game ends in a draw?

The rarest of rare chess moves makes its second appearance in a row at the World Championships.

So, what is it? "The capture of an enemy pawn by a pawn on the same rank and adjacent file, after the enemy pawn has just made an initial two-square advance."

If anyone has the slight edge here, it's GUKESH. This is such an unusual position for White, with Ding's best hope being a draw, unless Gukesh blunders while trying to force the issue.

No rook trade here, Gukesh turns it down and slides his rook to b1, delivering a check. Ding moves his king up to g2, and Gukesh follows him with a rook move to e1.
