Shakur Stevenson is all set to defend his WBC lightweight title against short-notice opponent Josh Padley on Saturday, February 22, at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of the Riyadh Season's The Last Crescendo. (More Sports News)
Padley replaced the ill Floyd Schofield, who had to pull out of the title challenge following illness and hospitalization. With just three days to go, Padley stepped in to take on Stevenson.
On the other hand, the 27-year-old Stevenson has held the lightweight title since November 2023, when he claimed the vacant belt with a unanimous decision victory over Edwin de los Santos. Prior to stepping up to the 135-pound division, he was the WBO super featherweight champion from 2021 to 2022.
This new opponent comes as a surprise for Stevenson, who steps back into the ring over six months after defending his title against Artem Harutyunyan.
Scheduled matchups against Joe Cordina and William Zepeda fell through due to injuries, leaving Stevenson without a fight for some time. Now, the Newark native faces a fighter he likely knows little about, adding an element of unpredictability to this showdown.
