How did Marche du Film come into being?

Before Marché du Film was established, film production companies used to rent Antibes cinema rooms to showcase their films, while producers and professionals had business discussions at rented hotels and apartments during the Cannes film festival.

In 1950, Robert Favre Le Bret, Executive Director of Cannes, suggested a Cannes film market, which was rejected by the Cannes Film Festival committee. For a decade, Festival de la Rue d'Antibes (unofficial market for film industry) ran alongside the Cannes Film Festival.

It was after seeing the success of the film market, the committee finally gave a nod to include it in the programme. In 1959, the Marché du Film was officially established by two members of the Trade Union Chamber of French Film Producers, Émile Natan and Bertrand Bagge, with the patronage of Minister for Culture André Malraux and Robert Favre Le Bret.

When is Marché du Film at Cannes 2025?
