Every spring, Hindus across India celebrate Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most auspicious days in Hinduism, known for its eternal prosperity and divine blessings. Also referred to as Akti or Akha Teej, this annual festival is deeply rooted in Hindu tradition, symbolizing endless good fortune, success, and spiritual merit.

Celebrated on the third lunar day (Tritiya) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Vaishakha (April–May), Akshaya Tritiya is considered one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. The word Akshaya means “imperishable” or “eternal”, implying that anything started or donated on this day will multiply and last forever.

Significance in Hindu Belief

It's believed that any good deed done on this day — be it charity, prayer, or investment — will yield eternal returns.

The day is traditionally marked by:

  • Charity and donations (daan), especially of food, clothes, and grains.

  • Buying gold and other valuables as it is believed such purchases will bring long-term prosperity.

  • Starting new ventures, including weddings, business deals, or even spiritual journeys.

  • Sacred rituals and pujas, including visits to temples, especially of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

Mythological Roots and Stories

Akshaya Tritiya is woven into several legends from Hindu mythology, each adding to its spiritual significance:

  • Birth of Lord Parashurama: The day is believed to mark the birthday of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is known for his valor, devotion to dharma, and his mission to rid the earth of evil kings.

  • Krishna and Sudama: On this day, Sudama, a poor Brahmin and childhood friend of Lord Krishna, visited him with just a handful of beaten rice. Touched by his humility, Krishna blessed Sudama with immense wealth. This story reinforces the belief that devotion and humility are always rewarded on this sacred day.

  • The Akshaya Patra: According to the Mahabharata, Draupadi received the Akshaya Patra, a magical vessel from Krishna, which provided endless food for the Pandavas during their exile, symbolizing the idea of sustenance without end.

  • Descent of the Ganga: Some traditions believe the sacred river Ganges descended to earth on this day, making it especially auspicious for holy dips in rivers and other water bodies.
