Biography

Shoojit Sircar, born around 1966–67, is a well-known Indian filmmaker, director, and producer recognized for his impactful Hindi films. Over the years, he has won several prestigious awards, including three National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards.

Sircar began his directorial journey with Yahaan (2005), a romantic war drama. However, it was Vicky Donor (2012), a social comedy about sperm donation, that brought him widespread recognition and a National Film Award. He followed this success with Madras Cafe (2013), a gripping political thriller. His 2015 film Piku, a heartwarming father-daughter story, became a massive hit and won the Filmfare Award for Best Film (Critics). Sircar also produced Pink (2016), a courtroom drama highlighting women's rights, which won a National Film Award. His later works include the emotional drama October (2018) and the satirical comedy Gulabo Sitabo (2020). In 2021, he directed Sardar Udham, a historical drama that received immense critical praise. He is also the co-founder of the production house Rising Sun Films.

Shoojit Sircar was born into a Bengali family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya Barrackpore Airforce and later earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University. His love for cinema grew after attending the International Film Festival of India in Delhi. He was particularly inspired by the American documentary Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam and Satyajit Ray라이브 바카라 classic Pather Panchali. Before entering films, he worked as an accountant at Le Meridien hotel in Delhi and was also involved in the advertising industry. In the early 1990s, he formed a theatre group called Act One, which included now-famous actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Piyush Mishra, and Ashish Vidyarthi.

On the personal front, Shoojit Sircar is married to Jhuma Sircar, and they have two daughters, Koyna and Anannya. He lives with his family in Kolkata. Apart from filmmaking, he is passionate about football and plays for the All Stars Football Club, which raises funds for charity.
