Myanmar Earthquake: Over 1,600 Dead In Burma, 17 In Bangkok; Global Aid Effort Underway

The death toll from the massive 7.7 earthquake in Myanmar has now crossed 1,600. As per the latest reports, at least 1,644 people have been declared dead, while 3,408 people have been injured. Meanwhile, in Bangkok, Thailand, the death toll has increased to 17.

Furthermore, the United Nations has stated that damaged roads and infrastructure are hindering the search and rescue operations in Myanmar.

  • The death toll in Burma has increased to 1,644 people. As search and rescue operations continue, at least 3,408 people have been injured.

  • In Bangkok, at least 17 people have been killed. Rescue operations are underway to pull out the dozens of workers trapped at the site of the collapsed skyscraper in the Thai capital. Over 70 workers remain trapped under the rubble.

  • As per city authorities, 32 people have been injured and around 83 are still unaccounted for, the majority of which are at the site of the 30-storey tower block under construction, which collapsed on Friday after the earthquake.

  • The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has stated that humanitarian operations in Myanmar have been hindered due to damaged roads and damaged infrastructure.

  • "Damage to the Yangon-Nay Pyi Taw-Mandalay expressway led to service disruptions, with cracks and surface distortions forcing highway buses to halt operations", the UN agency said in a statement.

  • Meanwhile, as Myanmar works tor eel in from the aftermath of this earthquake, the global aid effort continues. India, Israel, China and many other nations have sent in aid and rescue teams to Burma to help with the relief effort. Organisations such as OCHA, WHO and more have also sent in aid and teams to Myanmar.

  • Furthermore, anti-coup fighters have called for a two-week ceasefire to focus on earthquake relief. As per reports, the People's Defence Force (PDF) will pause offensive operations starting March 30, 2025, while maintaining defensive actions, according to the shadow National Unity Government (NUG).

  • The NUG, which was formed in 2021 by ousted officials, have vowed to collaborate with the UN and NGOs for rescue operations.
