Myanmar Earthquake: Military Junta Declares Temporary Ceasefire Till April 22 Amid Rehab Efforts

The ceasefire announcement came after an armed resistance group opposing Myanmar's military government earlier condemned the junta for carrying out airstrikes on villages while the country is still reeling from an earthquake that has claimed over 2,000 lives.

Amid ongoing rehabilitation work after last week's 7.7 magnitude earthquake that killed over 2,000 people, Myanmar's military regime on Wednesday announced a temporary ceasefire in the country's civil war against armed opponents.

The decision, as per reports, has been taken to allow relief and rehabilitation operations following last week's deadly earthquake.

Myanmar has been locked in civil war with multiple armed opposition groups since a 2021 coup, when the military seized power from the elected government of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

Shortly after Friday's devastating earthquake, military jets launched airstrikes and drone attacks in Karen state, near the KNU headquarters, according to the Free Burma Rangers, a relief organisation.

What Did The State Media Say?

As per the report by MRTV, the ethnic armed groups and local militias will also refrain from attacking state security forces and military bases to escalate the situation. If those groups do not follow those conditions, the army will take the necessary measures, the statement said.

In its nightly news bulletin, MRTV said the ceasefire was to facilitate rehabilitation of the country after the disaster, which killed more than 2,700 people and triggered a humanitarian crisis.

However, Min Aung Hlaing said that the military had halted its offensives, but unspecified rebels were planning to exploit the disaster and preparing to attack. He warned that the armed forces would "respond accordingly".

Military's Airstrikes Amid Earthquake Devastation

An armed resistance group opposing Myanmar's military government earlier condemned the junta for carrying out airstrikes on villages while the country is still reeling from an earthquake that has claimed over 2,000 lives.

As per Reuters, the Karen National Union, one of Myanmar's oldest ethnic armies, issued a statement saying the junta "continues to launch airstrikes on civilian areas, even as the population endures immense suffering from the earthquake."

The group said that under normal circumstances, the military would be prioritising relief efforts, but instead is focused on "deploying forces to attack its people".

Myanmar Earthquake

A 7.7 magnitude quake hit Myanmar on Friday with the epicenter near Myanmar라이브 바카라 second-largest city of Mandalay. It damaged the city라이브 바카라 airport, buckled roads and collapsed hundreds of buildings.

The Myanmar state media has revealed that the death toll in the recent multiple earthquakes in the country has surpassed 2,000 people as the rescue mission continues amid harsh climate.

The quake has not only taken lives but also increased the possibility of hunger and disease outbreaks in a country amid the ongoing civil war, as warned by aid groups and the United Nations.
