In the latest development, authorities in Nepal lifted a curfew on Saturday, which had been imposed in the eastern part of Kathmandu following violent clashes between security personnel and pro-monarchy protesters, as tensions eased in the area.

On Friday, parts of Kathmandu witnessed a tense situation after pro-monarchy protesters pelted stones, attacked the office of a political party, set fire to vehicles and looted shops in the Tinkune area of the capital during a demonstration demanding the restoration of the monarchy and Nepal's status as a Hindu kingdom.

Press Trust of India reported that two persons, including a TV video journalist, were killed in the clashes. The army was later called out to control the situation.

While police have arrested 105 agitators who were involved in burning houses and vandalising vehicles during Friday's violent demonstration.

The protest turned violent when agitation convener Durga Prasad broke security barricades and moved in a bulletproof vehicle towards Baneshwar, where Parliament House is located. Those arrested included Rashtriya Prajatantra Party general secretary Dhawal Shamsher Rana and party central member Ravindra Mishra.

"Prasai, the key person behind Friday's violent demonstration, is at large," Superintendent of Police of Kathmandu District Police Range Apil Bohara said, as quoted by PTI.

Protestors Demand

Monarchists have been demanding the restoration of the monarchy since the former king appealed for support in a video message broadcast on Democracy Day on February 19.

The pro-monarchy activists also held a rally on March 9 in support of the former king, who landed at Tribhuvan International Airport from Pokhara after visiting religious sites in different parts of the country.
