Congress Leader and national spokesperson Dr Shama Mohamed came under fire for her questionable remarks against Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma. Mohamed's comments came after Sharma was dismissed at 15 runs during a match with New Zealand at the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday.
In a now deleted tweet, the Congress spokesperson allegedly body shamed Sharma and said - “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!”
"What is so world-class about him when compared to his predecessors? He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the captain of India," she added further.
However, Mohammed did not delete the tweet fast enough as it prompted a sharp reaction from the Bharatiya Janata Party.
BJP leaders took to X and took a dig at Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi.
Taking to X, Shehzad Poonawalla said - “Those who have lost 90 elections under captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are calling captaincy of Rohit Sharma unimpressive!”
BJP Leader Radhika Khera also attacked the Congress party over the spokesperson's remarks, stating - "The sheer audacity! This is the same Congress that humiliated athletes for decades, denied them recognition, and now dares to mock a cricketing legend? The party that thrives on nepotism is lecturing a self-made champion?”
“Rohit Sharma is a World Cup-winning captain. Your leader, @RahulGandhi can’t even captain his own party without crashing it into the ground!” she added further.
Apart from BJP, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi hailed Rohit Sharma as a great captain. Taking to X< the Uddhav Sena leader said - "Not an avid cricket fan however even with my limited interest in the game, I can say that Rohit Sharma - with extra pounds of weight or without it, has led India team to great heights. It is his work and commitment to it that matters. Win the trophy, Champion!"
Meanwhile TMC MP echoed Congress' Shama Mohamed and said that Rohit Sharma should not be on the team.
