Former Delhi Chief Minister and Kalkaji MLA Atishi has been chosen to lead the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi Assembly. With this, Atishi has made history by becoming the first female Leader of Opposition.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference, AAP leader Gopal Rai confirmed that Atishi had been chosen as the leader during the legislative meeting on Sunday.
"With a consensus, Atishi was elected as legislative party leader. The people have given a mandate to AAP to sit in Opposition. In the Delhi Assembly, Atishi will be the Leader of Opposition... AAP will ensure BJP fulfils its promises made during the elections, Atishi has the responsibility to protect the good work done by the party during our rule," he said.
"I am thankful to AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal for giving me the responsibility of the legislative party (as LoP). The public has given us the duty of opposition and AAP will show what a strong opposition it is," stated Atishi in response to being elected as the leader of opposition.
Atishi Becomes First Female LoP In Delhi Assembly
While she was the third female CM in Delhi, AAP MLA Atishi has now made history by becoming the first female leader of opposition in the Delhi Assembly.
Not only is this a first time a female LoP has been chosen, but this will also be the first time it will be an all-female led assembly in Delhi.
The first session of the Delhi Assembly is set to begin on Monday and will continue for the next three days. During this, the ruling BJP government has stated that the pending CAG reports against AAP and its performance will be tabled.
BJP returned to power in Delhi after a 27-year-long break. Ousting the AAP from Delhi, the ruling party secured a majority with 48 seats, leaving AAP with only 22 wins.
Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta was named as the next Delhi Chief Minister and took oath on February 20 at Ramilia Maidan in the presence of senior BJP leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
