After approaching the Kerala High Court to stay the screening of the Prithviraj-Mohanlal movie Empuraan, the state BJP unit has suspended leader Vijeesh Vettam.

As per an official notice shared by the Thrissur district office, Vettam has been suspended from the party.

Furthermore, Kerala High Court has refused to put a stay on the screening of the film.

Vettam approached the HC and alleged that the film promotes anti-nationalism and paves the way for religious hatred.

The controversy erupted after several right-wing groups claimed that the film depicted and alluded to the 2002 Gujarat riots. However, groups added that the film showed the incident without referring to the Godhra train burning, which triggered the violence in Gujarat.

BJP leader Vijeesh Vettam moved the Kerala High Court and stated that the film promotes "anti-nationalism." However, the state High Court refused to stay the screening of the Mohanlal-starrer.

"Was it not certified by the Censor Board…Before the release of the movie, the statute contemplates it has to be certified by the censor board. It has come out. What is the subsequent objection that is being raised...You are unnecessary giving publicity to such things… I am suspecting your bonafides…All publicity-oriented litigation," the HC observed.

Malayalam film L2- Empuraan, starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, was released on March 27, 2025.
