The IRCTC app and website were not working on Thursday, causing trouble for passengers who couldn’t book tickets. Many people complained on social media about the issue. Downdetector, a site that tracks online problems, showed a large number of reports. IRCTC has not yet commented on the outage.
When users opened the IRCTC app, they saw an error message saying, "unable to perform action due to maintenance activity." The IRCTC website also displayed a message stating, "Due to maintenance activity, e-ticketing service will not be available." Downdetector reported over 2,700 complaints about the problem.
Some media reports also said that when some services were resumed, only premium-priced tickets remained available at double the standard rates.
IRCTC is the digital arm of the Indian Railways that provides multiple channels for passengers to book e-tickets through website, smartphone apps and SMS.
Several media reports said that the corporation suggested that passengers looking to cancel their tickets could do so by either calling customer care or emailing their ticket details for a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR).
This is the second time in December that the e-ticketing service has been disrupted. The service was down for an hour on December 9.
