Kharge Says US Tariff Hike, Restrained Indian Immigrants Despite PM Modi's US Visit, Are 'Insult' To Country

These comments come days after PM Modi had a meeting with US President Donald Trump during his US visit. The issues of tariff and immigration which the opposition parties have been protesting against, were not raised with Trump during their meeting.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not being able to 'stop the insult' of Indians as the illegal deportees from US are still being brought to India chained in their seats and the US hiking tariffs despite the PM's foreign visit.

Kharge was speaking to his party general secretaries and in-charges at the Congress headquarters at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi when he made the comments against the ruling party and PM Modi.

These comments come days after PM Modi had a meeting with US President Donald Trump during his US visit. The issues of tariff and immigration which the opposition parties have been protesting against, were not raised with Trump during their meeting.

Kharge Slams PM Modi

Hitting out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, Mallikarjun Kharge said the prime minister failed to stop the insult of Indians deported from the USA.

Kharge during his address stated, "Despite Modi ji's visit, America is sending back Indian citizens handcuffed as before. Vegetarians were given non-vegetarian food. Our government also failed to protest this insult properly."

He further spoke about the reverse tariff announcement that Trump made right before his meeting with PM Modi which will be affecting India's economy in the near future.

Kharge said, "America is also hurting us deeply in economic matters. They imposed reverse tariff on us, but the prime minister did not even protest against it. They are forcibly imposing a loss-making deal on us, which our government is silently accepting."

The Congress chief claimed, "This is clearly an insult to India and the people of India."

When opposition parties had picked the issue of Indian immigrants being brought in an 'inhuman' way from US while being deported, EAM S Jaishankar in Rajya Sabha stated, "This is not a policy applicable to any specific country nor indeed one only practiced by India."

Jaishankar said the standard operating procedure for deportation by aircraft provides for the use of restraints as per the US’ policy since 2012.

However, the SOPs do not include restraining women and children, he added.

The two batches of immigrants who arrived in India after PM Modi's US visit and MEA showing concern over the alleged 'mistreatment', were also restrained to their seats. The Sikh deportees were allegedly made to travel without their turbans.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee yesterday (February 18) also condemned the deportation of "illegal" Indian immigrants from the United States in chains, calling it “shameful”, while wondering whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi had protested the “inhumane treatment” during his recent US visit.

Despite US being India's largest trading partner during 2021-24, Trump recently said that "India is a very hard place to do business because of tariffs".

The impact of Trump라이브 바카라 reciprocal tariffs on India will depend on the US’ adjustments to duties and India라이브 바카라 response. The tariff hike may lead to a retaliatory tariff strategy from India's side in the near future.
