Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he was waiting for the day when Dalits and weaker sections assume leadership positions in every institution of India, as he reiterated the need for a country-wide caste census, reported PTI.

Addressing the birth anniversary celebrations of freedom fighter and Dalit leader Jaglal Choudhary, Rahul Gandhi also alleged that the BJP and the RSS were against the Constitution as it guarantees the rights of Dalits and the underprivileged.

"There is no participation of Dalits and the downtrodden in the present power structure and institutions of the country... There is a need for a caste census across India to identify the exact number of Dalits, minorities, and weaker sections of society," he said, as quoted by PTI.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha arrived in Patna on Wednesday morning after casting his vote in the Delhi assembly elections.

"I am waiting for the day when Dalits and weaker sections will be in leadership positions in every institution of the country... and I will continue my fight for the cause of the downtrodden," Gandhi stated.

Rahul Gandhi offered condolences to the Kadwa MLA and his family members, a state party leader said.

While this isn't Rahul Gandhi's first time supporting a caste census and Dalit causes; he's previously raised the census issue.

On January 27, Rahul Gandhi had delivered a fiery speech at the "Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhaan" rally in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, in which he accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of insulting the legacy of Dr. BR Ambedkar and the Constitution he framed.

Rahul Gandhi earlier said that "Dalits, backward classes, tribals, and the poor were being made slaves once again. The BJP and the RSS want a pre-independence-like situation in this country, where the poor have no rights and only the rich have power."
