Even though MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli are not the captains of these two sides but they are still two of the most popular faces in the tournament. Fans love them and that also leads to an off-field rivalry among the supporters of the two franchises.
Even though the overall head to head record is in the favour of CSK 22-11, the two sides have given some memorable games throughout the competition. Here is a list of five of the most memorable CSK vs RCB encounters.
IPL 2024: RCB won by 27 runs
RCB, on a winning run of five games, needed to beat CSK by at least 18 runs to qualify for the play-offs. CSK, on the other hand, had to just avoid a defeat of over 18 runs.
Batting first, RCB posted 218 thanks to a collective effort and then Yash Dayal completed his redemption with a four-wicket haul where he took the wicket of MS Dhoni to seal RCB's win and qualification. Dayal finished with four scalps and RCB knocked out CSK.
IPL 2019: RCB won by 1 run
It was an MS Dhoni masterclass at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium that night. Chasing 162, CSK's batters failed and Dhoni was left to do heavy lifting. CSK had to get 26 off the final over from Umesh Yadav and Dhoni slammed 24 off the first five balls. With just two needed from the last ball, CSK were the favourites but then Yadav forced Dhoni to miss and Parthiv Patel held his nerve to get a direct hit from behind the stumps to help RCB eke out a win by one run. Dhoni remained unbeaten on 84 off 48.
IPL 2018: CSK won by 5 wickets
Another MS Dhoni classic but this time in a winning cause. RCB gave CSK a 206-run target riding on a brilliant 30-ball 68 from AB de Villiers. Ambati Rayudu kept CSK in the chase with a crucial 82 even as he found little support from anyone else apart from Dhoni. The legendary wicket-keeper batter took over the mantle after Rayudu's dismissal and hit Corey Anderson for a six over long off in the last over to seal the game. Dhoni finished with 70 not out off just 34 balls.
IPL 2012: CSK won by 5 wickets
No Virat Kohli fan will ever forget this game. The mauling that Kohli got by Albie Morkel in this outing comes to mind whenever someone talks of Kohli's bowling.
Chasing 206, CSK were down and out in the game with 43 needed from 12 balls. Vettori trusted Kohli to bowl the 19th over and the game turned upside down. Morkel slammed Kohli for 4,6,4,6,2,6 to take 28 off the 19th and then CSK chased the total on the last ball of the final over.
IPL 2011 Final: CSK won by 58 runs
This is the loss that will pinch an RCB fan the most. It was the final and RCB's Chris Gayle was having the best IPL any batter ever had till then.
Even though CSK managed to get 205 in the first innings, RCB fans believed because they had Gayle. However, on the fourth ball of the chase, Gayle was caught behind off R Ashwin. And that was the game. RCB was never in the game and CSK won back-to-back titles.
