Kamindu Mendis of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Dushmantha Chameera of Delhi Capitals (DC) have staked early claims for 'Catch of the Season' with incredible efforts in back-to-back matches.
First, on Friday, April 25th, during SRH's clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Kamindu Mendis produced a moment of magic.
CSK debutant Dewald Brevis was batting aggressively, nearing a half-century and threatening to take the game away. Brevis powerfully struck a delivery from Harshal Patel straight down the ground towards long-off, a shot seemingly destined for the boundary. But Mendis, sprinting from long-on, launched himself into a full-length dive to his left, plucking the ball astonishingly out of the air with both hands.
The catch, instantly hailed as one of the best in IPL history, silenced the Chepauk crowd and proved a crucial turning point. It ended Brevis' fiery knock of 42 off 25 balls and shifted momentum firmly towards SRH.
The 26-year-old Mendis, known for his ambidextrous spin, had already contributed by dismissing the key wicket of Ravindra Jadeja. His stunning catch and composed unbeaten 32 later in the chase were instrumental in SRH successfully overhauling CSK's 154, securing a vital five-wicket victory.
Just four days later, on Tuesday, April 29th, it was Dushmantha Chameera's turn to electrify the crowd, this time at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
In the final over of KKR's innings, Mitchell Starc bowled a full delivery onto Anukul Roy's pads. Roy executed a seemingly effortless flick towards backwards square leg, the ball racing towards the boundary ropes.
Out of nowhere, Chameera, stationed in the deep, reacted instantly. He covered ground quickly, dove full-stretch to his left, and completed another sensational two-handed catch just inches off the turf.
Like Mendis' effort, Chameera's catch was spectacular, drawing gasps of disbelief and wild applause from the Delhi spectators. It capped off a dramatic final over for KKR and highlighted the fielding prowess the Sri Lankan fast bowler brings to the Delhi Capitals.
In a tournament where fielding standards have occasionally dipped, the extraordinary efforts of Kamindu Mendis and Dushmantha Chameera stand out brilliantly. These Sri Lankan players, making the most of their opportunities, have not only provided match-defining moments for their respective teams but have also treated fans to unforgettable displays of fielding excellence.
