The setpiece delivery is deflected and nearly trickles through to the unmarked Marco Asensio on the far end of the Preston box, but the home team do just about enough to avert danger. A counter results but Emil Riis is thwarted by the last Villa defender.

Meanwhile, in the Eredivisie, PSV Eindhoven are currently taking on Ajax at the Philips Stadion. The Dutch league game is goalless after 30 minutes of action.

The first-half whistle is blown, and the scoreline still reads 0-0. Aston Villa have had the lion's share of the possession, but have not been able to do much with it, lacking clinicality in the final third. Preston, on the other hand, will be happy with how they have defended so far, as would be their fans.

The players are back from the mid-game interval and Aston Villa, now attacking from left to right, kick the second half off. Preston would look to sustain their defensive rhythm while the Villans would dearly want to create a couple of genuine goal-scoring chances, early doors.

They needed to bounce back after a tepid first half, and bounce back they have. Aston Villa go into the lead in the 58th minute, courtesy Marcus Rashford's maiden goal for the club. The visitors dribble through from defence into the Preston final third before Lucas Digne assists Rashford with a low cross, that the 27-year-old Briton taps in gleefully with his first touch.

He waited so long for his first Villa goal, and now he has two in the space of five minutes. Marcus Rashford calmly converts a penalty, brought about by Morgan Rogers' foot being stomped inside the box by Andrew Hughes, in the 63rd to put the visitors 2-0 up. After all the hard work in the first half, Preston are staring down the barrel, 15 minutes into the second.

If there was any doubt about Aston Villa progressing to the Wembley Stadium, it is dispelled now. Jacob Ramsey takes off after receiving a free-kick and zooms into the Preston box before slotting it in in the 71st minute. The visitors cap off a superb 30 minutes or so with their third goal, one that effectively shuts out a comeback from the hosts.

And that's that. The referee blows the full-time whistle, and Aston Villa have emerged victors by a handsome 3-0 margin over the hosts. Preston began well, but it all came apart for them in the second half, where the Villans were rampant. Marcus Rashford scores his first two goals for the club and Jacob Ramsey puts the cherry on top as Unai Emery's lads march into the semi-finals.

The semi-final fixtures are now known, with the draw just having concluded. Aston Villa will face Crystal Palace, who beat Fulham 3-0 yesterday, at Wembley Stadium on April 26. The second semi will feature Nottingham Forest and the winner of the final last-four clash between Manchester City and Bournemouth.
