In his first Sunday address as pontiff, Pope Leo XIV issued a heartfelt plea for an end to global conflict, urging world leaders to choose peace over war.
Speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to thousands gathered in Vatican City, the newly elected Pope said: "The immense tragedy of the Second World War ended 80 years ago… now we're facing the tragedy of a third world war in pieces. I would like to address the powerful of the world and repeat this ever-relevant appeal: no more war."
Reflecting on current crises, BBC reported that the Pope Leo called for a ceasefire in Gaza, an enduring peace in Ukraine, and welcomed the recent agreement between India and Pakistan to halt hostilities. He said he was "deeply hurt" by the violence in Gaza, expressed hope for a "lasting accord" between India and Pakistan, and prayed for an "authentic, true, and lasting peace" in Ukraine.
“I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people," he said. "May everything possible be done to achieve peace swiftly. May prisoners be released and children return to their families.”
On the conflict in Gaza, the Pope pleaded for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian access to civilians.
Turning to South Asia, he welcomed the ceasefire announced between India and Pakistan after days of cross-border strikes and said he was “glad to hear” of the breakthrough. He expressed hope that negotiations would soon yield a permanent resolution.
The Pope's comments come amid competing proposals from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin for ending the three-year war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Israel has resumed its military offensive in Gaza and blocked aid access, following the collapse of a two-month ceasefire and hostage agreement.
