In a surprise move, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on Sunday, nearly two years after ethnic violence erupted in the state, triggering sharp criticism from the Congress.
The opposition party's attack came shortly after Singh tendered his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal.
The opposition accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of "allowing him to continue" in office despite the deteriorating situation and urged him to visit Manipur and hear the "horrific stories" from the people.
Congress Lashes Out At Manipur CM's 'Belated Resignation'
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi claimed Singh's resignation came only after mounting pressure from the public, the Supreme Court, and the Congress.
Gandhi also accused Biren Singh of "instigating" division in Manipur and blamed PM Modi for "allowing him to continue.".
"For nearly two years, BJP's CM Biren Singh instigated division in Manipur. PM Modi allowed him to continue despite the violence, loss of life, and the destruction of the idea of India in Manipur," Gandhi wrote on the microblogging website X.
"The resignation of CM Biren Singh shows that mounting public pressure, the SC investigation, and the no-confidence motion by the Congress have forced a reckoning," Gandhi added.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged that Singh resigned out of "compulsion" ahead of the party라이브 바카라 planned no-confidence motion in the Manipur Assembly.
"You need to understand the chronology. Tomorrow, the Congress party was going to move a no-confidence motion. The Manipur CM realised he does not have the majority… So he tendered his resignation today. It was his compulsion… There is an atmosphere of fear in Manipur," said Jairam Ramesh, as quoted by ANI.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge described Singh's resignation as "shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted."
He also blamed Modi as the real culprit of "disdain and apathy" towards the strife-torn state.
"It is painful to say that for 21 months, the BJP ignited a fire in Manipur and left the people across communities to fend for themselves," Kharge said in a post on X.
"Their rank incompetence and utter disregard for Rajdharma resulted in at least 258 people having died, more than 5,600 arms and 6.5 lakh rounds of ammunition were looted from police armouries, more than 60,000 people displaced, and thousands still forced to live in relief camps," he added.
Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal claimed Singh was “unfit” to be CM and accused the Centre of shielding him despite widespread calls for his removal.
"Since May 2023, it was clear to the entire world that N. Biren Singh라이브 바카라 position as Manipur CM was untenable. It was also evident that he was unfit to remain in his post, yet the Central Government continued to shield him despite growing demands for his removal," Venugopal wrote on X.
Manipur Crisis
The violence in Manipur has largely been fuelled by tensions between the Meitei community, based in the Imphal Valley, and the Kuki-Zo tribes in the surrounding hilly regions. What began as localised clashes in May 2023 escalated in 2024, spreading to previously peaceful areas like Jiribam district, near Assam.
In June, the discovery of a man's body in Jiribam triggered a fresh wave of violence, leading to widespread arson, gunfights, and the displacement of over 1,000 people.
