J-K Assembly Adjourned For 3 Hours Over Waqf Act

The central government suggests that the amendments serve to protect the transparency of the board and smooth operation of the land management and encroachment issues.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was adjourned on Wednesday for three hours over discussion on the Waqf Act. It is the third consecutive day when the assembly saw disturbance of usual business over the Waqf Act.

The amendments in the Waqf Act are seen as contentious by Muslim bodies as the proposed changes compromise the autonomy of the Waqf board. Asaduddin Owaisi of the All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen siad the bill will weaken Muslim rights and erode the basis of Waqf governance. The contentious bill saw a discussion of a record-long sitting of over 17 hours in the Rajya Sabha.

However, the central government suggests that the amendments serve to protect the transparency of the board and smooth operation of the land management and encroachment issues.

The central government announced that the Waqf Act will come into force from Tuesday, following the assent of the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha passed the bill after midnight on April 3 and April 4 respectively.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 (14 of 2025), the Central Government hereby appoints the 8th day of April, 2025 as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force." the notification released by The Ministry of Minority Affairs read.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated the amendments, saying,“The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth. This will particularly help those who have long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity” on X.

After the continuous ruckus on Monday and Tuesday in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, National Conference members called for a discussion again on Wednesday, including sloganeering by legislators from both sides, leading to the adjournment of the house by the speaker till 1 PM.

Wednesday is the last day of the Budget Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

The passing of the bill has seen protests across the country, with violence erupting in Manipur on Tuesday. Security has also been jacked up in the national capital라이브 바카라 Muslim dominated areas like Jamia Nagar - which saw major protests during 2019라이브 바카라 contentious Citizenship Amendment Act- to ensure law and order.

Muslim bodies and opposition MPs have moved the Supreme Court against the passing of this act.
